Now > Pre-Publication Galleys
Many publishers find it productive to send out pre-publication galleys
to major publications and leaders in their field. Pre-publication
means before the books or products official publication
date or launch date.
The idea is that book reviews sell books
and a review in a major publication can create favorable publicity
and strong demand. In effect, through one review you can sell lots
of books. And many of these major publications want to review books
on or before the books publication date. Since it takes time
for the editors and publishers to sort out the many manuscripts
they receive and assign them to the appropriate reviewer who already
has a busy schedule, you need to send your manuscript or pre-publication
date galley to these magazines and newspapers well in advance of
the publication date.
A galley is a bound manuscript that is
essentially finished but for final design and binding. Visit your
public library or search the web to find out which publications
you should send galleys to.
Consider these publications:
- ALA Booklist
- The Library Journal
- Publishers Weekly
- The New York Times
- The Washington Post
- The LA Times, and
- Kirkus Reviews
A review in one of these publications could skyrocket
your sales and lead to other reviews, other favorable publicity
and sales.
Remember, some of these publications review
processes take months, so they require publishers to submit galleys
at least nine (9) months to one year prior to the publication date.
Follow the submission guidelines.
