Now > Self-Publishing Explained
Self-publishing essentially combines
authorship and publishing. Self-publishing means you write the publication
and run the business. Self-publishers pay to produce the work. The
fascinating (and often frustrating) aspect of self-publishing is
that you handle all the phases of the publication yourself.
These steps include:
- Conceiving the idea.
- Writing, producing and printing the work.
- Editing the work.
- Developing the design and layout.
- Investing and/or raising money.
- Promoting, marketing and selling the work.
- Printing and manufacturing the product (or overseeing
this function).
- Shipping.
- Controlling the inventory.
- Billing and collecting and cashing checks, processing
payments.
- Record keeping and filing the tax returns.
While self-publishers are responsible for all of the
tasks listed above, you can work with freelancers who can handle
some of the tasks where you lack time and expertise.
A number of self-publishers expand their businesses
and later publish written works by other authors.
When you write to promote your business, it may be
even more important to work with freelance experts in order to create
the kind and quality of writing that conveys the right image for
your business.
