Why Self-Publish

People self-publish for profit, fun and to start a business. When you self-publish, your profit per product is likely to be much higher than when another publisher publishes your information products. So, why not self-publish and capture the extra profit for yourself…

Case Study—What we learned. In 1994, I self-published my book, Checkbook Management—A Guide to Saving Money. Last Christmas, a number of years after publication, a Barnes & Noble bookstore in Washington State ordered a copy of this book. We made a profit of $3.23, for fielding a telephone call and filling an order from existing inventory. Someone who I never met and probably will never meet wanted information on how to manage a checkbook. The person visited a bookstore, located my book in the Books in Print database, and special ordered my book. Perhaps the reader will visit our Web site and make additional purchases. Outstanding! I realized I had achieved something special.

Super Benefits. One of the greatest benefits of self-publishing is that you control ALL the rights associated with your work. This means you can sell your work over and over again to different people and in different formats and make more money. You can sell the work in printed, audio, video and digital format. Digital or electronic format may be the most valuable class of rights today because of the Internet. The possibilities are unlimited. You can sell your products year-in, year-out. It takes only a fraction of the amount of time to revise an existing work than to create a new one and the profits can be just as high or even higher.

The second super benefit is that you are your own boss. You call the shots and run your publishing empire. While you maintain your day job (which is probably a wise decision assuming that you need to earn a steady income right now), you can start your publishing venture in your home in your spare time. This gives you the ability to control your expenses and the luxury and power to build your empire slowly and methodically. Start small and master the business at your own pace. You can take advantage of some tax benefits as well.
